Are Flu Jabs a Waste of Time?

This question was raised today in the media following warnings from health experts last night.

It has been reported that the flu (influenza) jab will only protect about 3% of the patients this winter. This comes at a cost of an estimated £100 Million. The ineffectiveness has been attributed to the fact that the flu virus has mutated so much that the current vaccine is near useless. The flu jab usually protects around 60% of patients.

Whilst there is much work to be done to evolve the flu jab to keep a pace with the constantly mutating influenza virus.

We still advise patients who are defined as being in a ‘At Risk Group’, continue to have their annual flu jab. If you are unclear about whether you fall into this group please speak to your GP.
